What is a Retrofit Assessment

An official PAS 2035 Retrofit Assessment is the initial stage of the process of carrying out retrofit installation work, in order to understand what measures are required to improve the energy efficiency of your property.

‘Retrofit’ means fitted after the property was built. New build housing will already conform to current Building Regulations and therefore already be energy efficient.

The assessment normally takes 1-3 hours to complete and must be done by a fully qualified Retrofit Assessor, who will be able to assess the potential, risks and installation plan for your property. The results will include a comprehensive report with three key parts:

  • An energy report that outlines the current energy use of the property (this is not the same as an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC))
  • A condition survey that looks at any issues that could affect energy efficiency improvement action
  • An occupancy assessment to reflect any patterns of energy use for hot water, heating and lighting.

How does a Retrofit Assessment work?

As part of the retrofit assessment, we will carry out three specific tasks to collect sufficient information to produce their report.

  1. We will ask a series of questions about your property to ascertain how you use the property and identify any issues with energy that you’re aware of.
  2. Insulation is one of the most important factors that contributes to a property’s energy efficiency, so we will always take time to specifically check the type and level of insulation present
  3. We will carry out a physical inspection of your home and review each room individually. This will involve measuring walls and windows, taking photographs, checking any certification, identifying the heating and hot water systems, and identifying any factors which may hinder the efficiency measures.

What next?

After your assessment, we will pass on all the findings to a retrofit coordinator who will create an Energy Efficiency Improvement Plan for you. This will include detailed recommendations for your home, based on heat loss calculations and other energy improvements that have been identified. Once you’ve reviewed our report, you can choose which of the suggested measures you want to take. Your retrofit coordinator will then get quotes from installers, submit designs, and plan the work schedule. We may, depending on your circumstances, be able to source funding to help with the costs
